despite the doors being closed on dissident in 2009, former boss andy blake has been anything but quiet, with his world unknown imprint bringing the acid and ebm sounds of his night of the same name to the world. now hes started another label, in plain sight, which looks set to bring more esoteric house sounds to our ears, with the first release coming from the hitherto unknown youngtee. the first track, >dr chocolate< fuses the kind of oddball low-slung sounds and spoken-word samples that in flagranti have been masters of for years, with jazzy keys and 808 cowbells which hint at a subtle chicago influence. the classic house influence continues of >perfect model<, which combines misty chords with an 80s pop groove, falsetto vocal sample and synth jam solo which comes across as alternate universe michael jackson track. as youd expect from a label curated by blake, its house music, but not quite as you know it.

when no one is watching ramona, is usually listening to future times records and beautiful swimmers all days. maxmillion dunbar is not only half of those aquanauts, but also running the label and releasing music as max(million) d(unbar). what a guy! hanging out in the vague territory between slow-motion house with a hip hop feeling or dubby and dubious fun music, his melodious approach is extremely hard to categorize but all the more enjoyable. >polo< already saw the light of day on >max trax for world peace<, but ramonas favorite dj ata and live at robert johnson manager oliver hafenbauer were so much in love with the bleepy bonbon that they offered it a place by their fireside. now cautiously modified, fine-tuned and extended for its label home, its a rainforest serenade for beatnik boys and girls, with all the ingredients you want from tha d. the only kid able to thrown down the gauntlet in front of maxi is frankfurts melody man phillip lauer (arto mwambe, brontosaurus, etcetera etcetera). turning >polo< into one of his trademark sluggish bass line barrage tracks with falsetto synths and sharp snares. get your vogue brogue out.

after two smoldering releases on figure & spc, roberto bosco is back for his third offering for len fakis spc imprint. a future-classic 4 track techno ep, with more than enough to keep the peak time floors happy, this is big room music at its most intelligent and sensitive. easing us into the thick of it, charming noise takes humming, rumbling bass tones and a metallic clang as its themes. slow burning and readily effective, its a brooding monster for the late hours. i just cant breathe pushes the adrenalin up a few notches in a screaming, white noise attack on the senses. boscos trademark heavy bass rumble and crisp percussion layers hold their own in this reduced killer. were then ready to embark on an emotional voyage as the masterful see the light emerges from the depths with its pushing acid bass and beautiful atmospheric melody. classic strings and synths swirl and build in a tender and heartfelt piece of timeless techno. closing the ep, i was lonely takes the vibe into more reduced, after-hours zones with robertos cool and low-slung take on the smoother sound of futuredeep house.

were you able to touch them � to render them tangible and actually trace the rhythms in yachts i walked alone � the lines would form steep hills and sudden cliffs that rise and drop off, again and again, at steep, sharp angles. the wiry funk and itchy bass move like a controlled spasm, convulsive and itchy, until the breakdown, when the nervous tension gets released in a series of cowbell clunks and a guitar solo that leaks out like a slow moving electric current. on this vinyl only collection of remixes, parisian duo get a room!, aka rove dogs and jeff masson, massage out the herk and jerk, making for a more relaxed and aurally warm take. the sound of things is far housier here � and more pop, in the very best way � owing to synths where there previously were none and angles newly bent and refashioned into smooth, circling cycles of disco-infused sound. and theres more from jacques renault, who contributes a remix both with and without vocals. the new york city dance music stalwart takes his time building to a plateau of perfectly paced beats and a wall of recurring dream(y) house rhythms. feels like music that fills the room, takes over your senses, and wraps you in its effervescence. - kali holloway
